Meet Captain Joe

My name is Joseph Taylor.  I am the owner and operator of Captain Joe’s Charters. I have been boating since I was 8 years old. When I was 12 years old I purchased my first boat (a 14 foot Hobie Cat) and the rest is history.

When I was in High School and College I raced sailboats at the Annapolis Yacht club and surrounding areas for years at a competitive level.  Learning about boating on a sailboat really gives you an understanding of the water unlike any other in my opinion.

Moving on. Later in college I was approached by the owner and operator at Paradise Watersports in Ocean City Maryland about being offered a deckhand and a l jet ski guide for his business. This would eventually be where I realized I wanted to work on the water long term.  I had a great couple of summers and really learned the businesses. I also learned how important it is to be able to think in your feet and stay calm at all times to insure every customer onboard remains safe  and happy at all times.

At the time I was in school for Exercise Science and Physical Education. After receiving degrees in both of those  in 2006 and 2007 respectfully, I followed that path and became an Elementary Physical Education teacher and a coach.   Over the years I coached soccer, basketball, wrestling, softball, baseball, football, and I was a strength and conditioning coach at  several different private schools in the Tampa Bay Area.

When Covid hit in March of 2020, life changed for so many of us, including me. I realized it was time to step away from education and peruse something else. With much consideration, my wife and I decided it was time for me to go back to school and pursue my captains license.  This was something my wife and I had talked about for over 15 years. We always just kind of dismissed it because we just assumed I would be a teacher for the rest of my life, so there wasn’t any point. After leaving education we decided this was going to be my next path so that September I enrolled in Sea School  in St Petersburg and started the process.   Shortly there after we decided working for someone else was no longer in my path. After much thought and a whole lot of talking and stressing, my wife and I decided to start Captain Joe’s Charters Dunedin LLC. This would eventually become the private/custom charter we own and operated in Dunedin FL until 2024.

In 2024 the Taylor family decided it was time to relocate back to the Maryland area so we can raise our daughter closer to cousins and my parents.  After a lot of back and forth about what to do with Captain Joes we decided Ocean City MD was where we wanted the business to live its next life and we couldn’t be more excited.
